Nothing ends a hunt faster than cold. When you're sitting motionless in a tree stand at 5 AM in January, your body is generating almost no heat. A proper layering system is the difference between hunting until dark and climbing down shivering at 8 AM.
The Three-Layer System
Base Layer: Moisture Management
Your base layer's job is to move sweat away from your skin. Cotton kills — it absorbs moisture, holds it against your skin, and accelerates heat loss. Choose merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Merino wool: Natural odor resistance, excellent temperature regulation, comfortable next to skin. Premium choice
- Synthetic (polyester blends): Faster drying, more affordable, durable. Good budget option
- Weight: Midweight (200-250g/m²) for all-day sits. Lightweight for walk-in hunts
Mid Layer: Insulation
This layer traps warm air. Your best options:
- Fleece: Warm, quiet, dries fast. The go-to mid layer for most hunters
- Down: Best warmth-to-weight ratio. Compress it in your pack for the walk in, then layer up at the stand. Avoid if rain is likely — wet down is useless
- Synthetic insulation: Slightly heavier than down but retains warmth when wet. Best all-around choice for unpredictable weather
Outer Layer: Wind and Weather Protection
Your outer shell blocks wind — the number one heat thief. Look for softshell fabrics that are windproof but quiet. Hardshell waterproof jackets are louder but necessary in rain and snow. Many hunters carry both.
Extremities Matter Most
Hands: Pack thin liner gloves for drawing your bow and heavy insulated mitts for the wait
Feet: Insulated rubber boots (800-1200g Thinsulate) with merino wool socks. Never wear cotton socks hunting
Head: You lose significant heat through your head. A fleece balaclava covers face, neck, and head in one piece
