Garmin GPSMAP 66i integrates two capabilities into a single device: the GPSMAP 64/65 series GPS navigation platform with TopoActive maps and multi-constellation satellite support, and the inReach satellite communicator for two-way messaging, location tracking, and SOS signaling via the Iridium satellite network. In any terrain outside cellular coverage — which is most backcountry hunting and hiking terrain — the inReach component provides the two-way emergency communication that cell phones cannot.

Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) and SPOT trackers transmit one-way distress signals. inReach allows two-way text messaging with anyone — family, emergency contacts, or GEOS rescue coordination — via satellite. Subscription Planning

inReach service requires a Garmin subscription plan ranging from safety-only to unlimited messaging. The Safety plan covers tracking and SOS at the lowest cost; the Recreation and Expedition plans add two-way messaging at increasing frequency. For most backcountry hunters and hikers, the Recreation plan balances cost with the ability to send position updates and check-in messages. Activate the plan before departure — inReach subscriptions require account setup that can't be completed in the field.
