Pursuit® IV Combo

Penn Pursuit IV combo pairs a 10-foot heavy surf rod with an 8000-size Penn spinning reel in a matched system designed for surf fishing and long-distance inshore casting. At 10 feet and heavy action, the rod generates the leverage needed to cast heavy sinkers and large baits the distance required to reach fish beyond the break zone in surf conditions. The 8000-size reel holds enough line capacity and has sufficient drag to handle large inshore species — red drum, striped bass, and bluefish — that run hard in open surf.

Surf Fishing System Matching

Surf fishing requires matched components more than most freshwater fishing — casting a 4-6 oz sinker on a 10-foot rod puts substantial load on the reel seat and guide train. Penn designed the Pursuit IV combo with the rod's spine, action, and guide sizing matched to the reel's weight and casting characteristics. This prevents the guide overload, line slap, and guide ring wear that mismatched components develop over a season of heavy surf casting.

Surf Rigging for Large Inshore Species

Fish finder rigs (a sliding sinker above a swivel to a 30-50 lb fluorocarbon leader with a large circle hook) are the standard surf rig for red drum and striped bass. Circle hooks self-set on the run — when a fish picks up the bait and moves, the hook rotates to the corner of the mouth without requiring a hard hookset, which is important for managed-harvest species where release survival rate matters.
