First Weekend Camp Checklist: Sleep, Cook, Light, Layer
Peak Performance Outfitters Editorial TeamCamping gear sales are built to confuse first-timers. The truth is simpler: a successful first weekend comes down to four systems. Get these right, skip everything else.
1. Shelter system: tent + footprint
Pick a tent rated for one more person than you'll bring. Two campers? Three-person tent. The extra space holds gear and stops the "wet wall" feeling at 3am. Always pack a footprint or tarp under it — it doubles tent life and keeps the floor dry.

2. Sleep system: bag + pad (the pad matters more)
Cold ground steals heat faster than cold air. A sleeping pad with a real R-value (R 3+ for spring/fall) does more for warmth than upgrading your bag. Pick a bag rated 10°F colder than the forecast low.

3. Cook system: one stove, one pot, one cup
A canister stove, a 1L pot, and an insulated cup will boil water for coffee, freeze-dried meals, and cleanup. That's 80% of car-camping food prep. Add a long spoon and a folding knife and you're done.

4. Light system: headlamp first, lantern second
A headlamp keeps your hands free for setup, cooking, and middle-of-the-night trips. Add a small lantern for the picnic table. String lights are nice-to-have, not need-to-have.

Layer kit (don't skip this)
- Base layer (synthetic or merino — never cotton)
- Mid layer (fleece or light puffy)
- Rain shell (always pack it, even if forecast is clear)
- Wool socks · hat · gloves for shoulder seasons

The packing checklist
- Tent (3-person for 2 campers) + footprint
- Sleeping bag (rated 10°F below forecast) + pad (R 3+)
- Stove + 1L pot + insulated cup + spoon
- Headlamp (with spare batteries) + small lantern
- Three-layer apparel kit + rain shell
- Water bottle or hydration reservoir
- Bug spray, sunscreen, basic first aid
Pack this list, leave the rest at home, and you'll come back wanting to go again — which is the whole point.
