CHOOSING YOUR GEAR
Questions about fishing gear
How do I choose a first rod and reel?
Start with where you fish, your target species, and the technique you plan to use. A combo can simplify matching the rod and reel, but check its line and lure ratings and whether line or tackle is included. A combo is not necessarily a complete kit.
What else should I match to my setup?
Choose line, hooks, and lures suited to the rod's ratings, target species, and local conditions. For saltwater use, check the manufacturer's suitability and care instructions. Check local licensing and fishing rules before your trip.
Does every fishing trip need the same safety equipment?
No. Shore, wading, kayak, and boat fishing have different risks and equipment needs. A fishing vest is not automatically a life jacket. Select an appropriately approved, properly fitted life jacket for boating and check local requirements. Offshore communications and emergency beacons require separate trip-specific planning; a rod-and-reel purchase does not cover these needs.
